My Story
Tonya’s life journey has been shaped by resilience, service, and compassion. As the wife of a military serviceman, she lived in several states before returning to Michigan, where she and her family began building their civilian life in Detroit. She is the proud mother of two adult sons and grandmother of three grandsons. With a strong background in healthcare and human services, Tonya brings years of experience serving others through roles in medical billing, medical records, patient support, laboratory services, and direct care. Her passion for advocacy extends to homelessness prevention, domestic and sexual abuse awareness, senior services, and both human and animal rights. Her commitment to service also extends into ministry and volunteerism. Through church and community outreach, Tonya has served in hospitality, singles ministry, and pastor’s aid ministry, while also participating in initiatives that support the unhoused and promote awareness around violence against women. She has additionally volunteered with the American Red Cross. Currently, Tonya serves as a Service Coordinator for a nonprofit organization in Detroit, where she is especially passionate about supporting seniors and helping diverse populations access the resources they need to thrive. She is also proud to be part of the ROOTED IN team, working to help redevelop District 4 and plant the seeds for tiered community gardens that foster growth, wellness, and community connection.
